biography

Jürgen Franz is Flute-Professor at the Musikhochschule (University of music) in Hamburg
and a member of the NDR Elbphilharmonieorchester Hamburg.
He gives masterclasses in Germany, China, Japan, Spain, USA, and as a Haynes Artist.

Receiving his first lessons at the age of 12, he later studied with Jean Claude Gérard,
Maxence Larrieu, and James Galway. As one of the most varied flutists, he plays solo concerts and all sorts of chamber music.

 He is a frequently seen guest at major flute festivals and as a jury member in international flute competitions. Jürgen Franz became a member of the Bielefeld Philharmonic Orchestraand played Principal Flute in the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra. As guest he has performed as solo flute in the Philharmonic Orchestra from “La Scala di Milano” and Orchestra Santa Cecilia Rome. For 8 years he was a member of the Richard Wagner Festival orchestra in Bayreuth.
Lorin Maazel invited him to play as solo-flutist with the orchestra “Symphonica Toscanini“.

Mr. Franz performed on Solo CD’s and radio broadcasts throughout Germany, Italy, France, Japan, USA, and Switzerland.
Sir James Galway says of Franz’ recording, “European Recital”: “This CD is one of the most interesting to be issued for a long time. The repertoire is very attractive. It is very well recorded and the playing is of the highest standard. A pleasure to listen to.
